Beating the Heat - how to stay cool as temps soar this week!
It's getting HOT out there! Make sure you're staying on top of the heat so you can stay on top of your fitness!

As temperatures absolutely SOAR this week, we are reminded yet again that New York weather can be a bit... well, crazy. But that doesn't stop us from pushing towards our fitness goals, right?!
That said, there are some considerations and precautions that we should all be taking during these extreme heat waves to keep our bodies healthy and recovering properly. Check out our top tips below, and see you (hopefully) in the gym this week - and if it's just too hot (see tip #5) - don't sweat it, we'll see you soon :)
Heat Tip #1: Water, water, water!
We know, this is obvious. But how many of us are in an office (read: air-conditioned) setting all day, and not hydrating our bodies completely? Take that daily habit, then get out of work to go to the gym only to find you're sweating profusely after the warm-up, and... you can see the potential issue. Especially during high-heat times of year, do your best to hydrate early and often throughout the day. So when you get to the gym you're not starting from behind.
This goes without saying as well, but make sure to bring a water bottle with you to the gym! We have fountains with bottle refill stations for you! And if you find yourself without a water bottle and needing more than just sips from the fountain, we have you covered with filtered water for sale in the gym fridge.
Heat Tip #2: Electrolytes
This goes hand-in-hand with the last tip, but when we sweat we are not only losing water, we're also losing salt. You may find that adding some electrolytes into your water helps you retain that hydration and recover better. We sell LMNT packets and LMNT sparkling right in the gym, and you can also replenish electrolytes with a simple squeeze of lemon and pinch of salt in your water bottle. Try it out, and see how you feel!
(mini-tip: some people find the LMNT packets too strong when added to a single water bottle. So start with half a packet and go from there!)
Heat Tip #3: Proper Clothing
Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is the way to go on hot and humid days. We love a good tri-blend t-shirts (actually, most of our Aevitas T-shirts are this material because as coaches we always want the most breathable options!). Shorts are also a great option, whether that be loose running shorts or a bike short option. Bring an extra shirt (or two?) to put on after the WOD so you're not sitting in your sweat on the drive home ;) And of course all CrossFitters know that it's totally acceptable to rip your shirt off halfway through the WOD - just please don't leave your sweaty garments on the floor when you leave!
Heat Tip #4: Take a Break
Heat can really sneak up on you, even if you're taking the appropriate precautions. During the workout, check in with your body often and if you need to, take a break! We don't need to PR every day in the gym (this should go without saying, but a good time to remember!). If on a hot day you only hit 70% of your planned weights, or the workout takes you a couple minutes longer than it "should" - that's totally fine!
Listen to your body and take care of it, by sipping on your water, or sitting down for a minute, or wandering over to the gym fan. Do what you need to do to stay safe!
Heat Tip #5: Escape the Heat - Literally
This is an extension of the last tip, but if you're taking the breaks and drinking your water and you are still not feeling OK, remove yourself from the heat and/or physically cool yourself down! We have single-use ice packs, or you can douse a shirt or gym towel in cold water and drape it over your head/neck. You may want to head into the front area of the gym where the A/C is running to help cool you down further.
If you find yourself in a situation where your best efforts to stay cool aren't working, and especially if you are feeling unwell (shaky or weak, or even nauseous) let a coach know and we will help you. Do NOT attempt to "push through", as this can get pretty dangerous pretty quickly. Again, listen to your body, and let us help you if you need it!
Finally, if it's too hot and you know you haven't taken steps (like hydration, etc) to stay on top of it, it's OK to not hit the gym. Or, come to the gym and do something lower-intensity than the WOD. While we of course want to see you, like, all the time, we totally understand that sometimes you need to take a rest day. So take the rest day - then come back tomorrow hydrated and ready to go!
We hope that these tips help you stay cool this week (and during the next heat wave, whenever that is)! If you have more tips to stay cool, let us know!
